The skills training centre was established in 1995 primarily to offer skills training to the thousands of marginalised and disadvantaged men and women who have been deprived of a formal education. By training them in a variety of skills they are gaining self-esteem and a chance of obtaining employment in the formal or informal sector.
Trainees are being trained to be eligible for learner ships in large companies. The following courses are offered:
Constructional courses accredited with CETA:
Bricklaying, carpentry and plumbing Electrical installation accredited with energy SETA: House wiring (phase 1) and repair to electrical appliances Motor mechanics accredited with Merseta Welding courses accredited with Merseta Computer courses: Windows Xp and Office 2000 Other courses:
- Dressmaking,
- Shoe making,
- Upholstery,
- Shoe repairs.
All students undergo SMME (small, micro and medium enterprises) training which enables them to start their own small business and to understand the principles of how the business should function. They also attend a Life skills Course which deals with coping skills.
All training is non-discriminatory and caters for all race groups of either gender. Qualified instructors run the courses. The age of the trainees is normally between 16 and 35, but older trainees have participated. Since its inception 3600 unemployed have been trained. As training is primarily for the unemployed and for those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, the project cannot rely on fees to sustain it.
FEES: Between R750 and R1500 per 45-day course for unemployed trainees. Companies pay R4500 to R5000 per trainee.
Course materials, other than dressmaking fabrics are included in the fees. The materials used are costly and the cost of training is R4500 to R5000 per course. Because so many of those requesting to be trained are unable to pay anything at all a bursary scheme has been put in place. The project is largely dependent on donations. Our youth are very vulnerable to become involved in crime and drugs and are susceptible to contracting AIDS. Skills training and the opportunity to be gainfully employed provide a powerful deterrent to these social and personal ills.
St Anthonys Education Centre is registered under Section 21 of the Companies Act as an association not for gain, but qualifying for donations under Section 18A of the Income Tax Act.

St Anthony’s Job Advisory Centre
St Anthony’s Job Advisory Centre was established in 2009. Our objective is to find employment for our trainees as well as for the members of the broader community. We are an integral part of St Anthony’s Skills Training Centre which trains a broad spectrum of skills.
St Anthony’s Job Advisory Centre trains and equips its members with resources to become employable. Most of our members come from disadvantaged backgrounds with no formal education. We strive to uplift, market and give them opportunities to succeed in life. We coach and prepare them for the workplace.
