FRANCISCAN MATRIC PROJECT

The Franciscan Matric Project began in January 1986 in response to requests from concerned parents on the East Rand.  Students had either failed their matriculation exams or were unable to write due to disruptions in their schools and communities.  The aim was to help those students that for one reason or another needed an opportunity to rewrite Matric (Grade 12).  A real second chance was offered.

The students that attend the project come predominantly from the East Rand, but there are others that come from further a field.  Approximately 500 students register each year to follow a full-time matric syllabus, of these students approximately 400 are repeating.  Approximately 90 Grade 11 students register each year.  Each year the project has obtained consistently good matric results, with a high exemption rate, especially in Maths and Science. The overall pass rate of 2010 was 83%

The dedicated staff is made up of 23 qualified teachers, 3 administrators and a number of support personnel that serve the whole institution.

Funding is always a major concern, being a non-profit organisation, fees are kept as low as possible and are used strictly for the benefit of the students.  The fees paid by parents are used towards the running of the school and paying staff salaries.  Attempts are made to raise bursaries through private or corporate funding for deserving students that can only afford to pay minimal tuition fees, if any.  St Anthonys Education Centre is registered under Section 21 of the Companies Act as an association not for gain, but qualifying for donations under Section 18A of the Income Tax Act.
