The primary mission of the adult education section, which started in 1974, is to provide educational opportunities to adults who were deprived of access to education because of the political, economic or social conditions in their early years. The program lays much emphasis on human rights, human dignity and mutual respect. The education offers a key factor in personal growth and development, leading towards employment opportunities or further study. Since its inception 28000 adult learners have been accommodated.
Three informal settlements, Reiger Park Township and a mining hostel surround the Centre. It is also accessible to learners commuting by train and taxi. The project caters for learners who are unemployed as well as domestic workers, mineworkers, municipal and industrial laborers and those who wish to improve their educational qualifications. Day and evening classes cater for the needs of learners from literacy to matriculation.
FEES: R50 (Literacy to Level 4)
R100 per subject (Grade 10 to 12)
Registration, writing materials, the loan of books and use of library facilities are included in these amounts. An average of 1000 students is accommodated annually.
There is a great sense of achievement when students, some of whom started with the literacy program return qualified as lawyers, nurses or gainfully employed in the commercial sector. Many of them have come to thank Fr. Stan and their teachers for starting them on their road to success.
Funding is received from the Gauteng Department of Education in the form of a monthly rental for ABET classrooms. The salaries of the principal, the Head of Department, three secretaries, two security guards, two cleaners and teachers in this section are also paid by the Department of Education. In addition, they also subsidise, or purchase office equipment, photocopy paper and cleaning materials. St Anthonys Education Centre is registered under Section 21 of the Companies Act as an association not for gain, but qualifying for donations under Section 18A of the Income Tax Act.
